As part of the UNSW 2025 Strategic Plan, the UNSW Defence Research Institute (DRI) was established at UNSW Canberra to stimulate, unify and support defence-related research within the UNSW community while striving to build and maintain a network across both Australian and international defence industries. The DRI is now seeking a capable Business Development Manager—Defence to work with academic, industry and government partners to develop effective defence-related research partnerships.

The Business Development Manager—Defence works as part of UNSW’s Defence Research Institute and Knowledge Exchange teams to engage with UNSW’s experts and trusted partners in academia, industry and government to drive research commercialisation and engagement using deliberate planning and execution with our Defence and Defence industry partners. The position will be primarily based at UNSW Canberra and will spend regular and significant time at UNSW Sydney.

About the Role:

  • Role: Business Development Manager—Defence
  • Salary: Total Remuneration Package (Negotiable) – Approximately $165,000 – $185,000 inclusive of superannuation with bonus potential
  • Term: Full Time (35hrs/week), Fixed Term, 2 years with potential for extension

About the Successful Applicants

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Experience in senior roles in defence and/or defence industry or equivalent sector.
  • An outstanding track record in developing and closing technology and/or defence-related business deals including research and technology partnerships.
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a team to achieve substantial revenue targets and key performance indicators.
  • Experience developing and writing successful proposals and business cases for industry and government partners.
  • Extensive networks in Defence, defence industry or equivalent industries or sectors and strong relationship building skills.
  • This role would particularly suit transitioning veterans.
